Spring make-up collections are typically filled with softly-coloured products in hues of pale pink, pastel blue and an assortment of other decidedly girly, muted tones. That’s what makes the latest Chanel make-up collection, L.A. Sunrise – launching at the beginning of the European Spring – so striking with bold, confident shades of wild fuchsia, deep purple, cobalt blue and emerald green. It also makes it ideal for us here in SA, very much still in the throes of a simply scorching summer.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty pastel collection, and if Pantone’s Colours of the Year are anything to go by I am sure we’ll be seeing loads of them in the months to come. But with our current heatwave raging on with no end in sight, my spirit is craving brightness with bold punches of summery shades.
For this new collection, the CHANEL Makeup Creation Studio took inspiration from the dynamic beauty of sizzling Los Angeles, with its energising palette of striking colours and unique architectural design. Cityscapes meet sunrise in the most beautiful of colour-blocking unions. Move over Forrester Family, these hotties are the new Bold and Beautiful babes of Los Angeles.
The sun has barely risen over the bay, but a radiant glow already stretches over the distinctive architecture and greenery of Los Angeles. At the break of dawn, the sky lights up, the horizon is tinged with multiple shades, the ocean is saturated with pigments and the façades of buildings sparkle with shimmering reflections… Every color looks more vibrant and expressive in the exhilarating light of spring.
I attended the official launch of the new collection late last year and was given two of the products to use and review. I chose these two beauties below to fulfil my desires for summer-worthy cheeks and emerald green eyes.
Chanel Sunkiss Ribbon Création Exclusive (Limited Edition) (R885)
Blush just doesn’t get better than this and if the idea of a Pantone 2016 pastel sunset is too soft for your liking, rather revel in the boldness of a Californian sunrise with dramatic dawn-like shades of fuchsia pink, bright coral, intense rose, coppery beige and fresh pink. The five colours blend so beautifully when used together – just sweep the angled brush lightly over the pan and then let the soft brush hairs impart the colour onto your cheeks. I also like to use two shades in combination to give my cheeks a real pop of colour or to add a finishing touch of gentle bronze to my skin. Like all of the Chanel Exclusive Creations, it has a delightful scent which only enhances the experience of using such a luxury item.
Tip Sweep a combination of fresh pink and coppery beige over the face, concentrating on spots like the forehead, temples, jawline and chin, to add a sunkissed touch to your skin. For a burst of colour, combine bright coral with either fuchsia pink or intense rose on the apples of the cheeks.
Eye Want It All
These cream eyeshadow pots have to be my favourites! Not being much of an eyeshadow girl (the powder fall, the spills, the blending, the effort!) I just love how easy they are to use and that they offer such glorious long-wearing, shimmering colour payoffs. A gentle touch provides a soft sheen of colour, but the party really starts when you pile it on for a more intense effect.
Tip Use your fingers if you’re after a soft touch of colour or easy blending over the lids, but bear in mind you’ll lose some of the pigment on your fingertip. I prefer to use a soft eyeshadow brush to apply the colour initially (especially if I’m layering it on) and then a smudging brush to blend it into the creases and outwards. You can also use the small slanted brush provided (great for travel) to apply it as a gel eyeliner, which works fairly well, and also to add some to the lower lash line which gives a more full-eyed effect.
It’s not very hard to sell a good mascara to me and, being one of my favourites, when I saw this one now offered a limited edition purple hue I put it straight onto my summer wish list. I’m secretly hoping to find it under my pillow on Valentine’s Day *hints to the other half* but if I don’t I see a trip to the Chanel counter in my future, something I always enjoy because I leave with so many useful tips and tricks about make-up application and usually a free sample or two with my purchases.
FYI They also have the most amazing lighting system which allows you to customise the light to your needs to ensure the make-up you’re testing is going to look the way it does in store when you leave too. It’s brilliant for brides who are trying to decide on the perfect make-up look for their special day and can’t afford to take chances with iffy lighting.
