When it comes to professional salon skincare, Dermalogica has been high on my list for over a decade. They began way back in 1986 and quickly became one of the most popular professional skincare brands around the world. The difference? The brand offered simple, effective skincare solutions: free from common irritants such as SD alcohol, lanolin, mineral oil and artificial colours and fragrances, not to mention fancy-pants, rose-coloured packaging and full-of-it technology with names like ‘inhibitage’ and ‘botoxulox’. This was real skincare and it was a hit.
Fast forward over two decades, and the brand is now sold in more than 80 countries across the globe with a massive following that continues to demand the highest level of professional skincare. Their latest launches, which hit salons recently, offer just that with exciting renovations and additions to two of their best-loved products. Here’s the first…
♥ Dermalogica AGE smart Daily Superfoliant (R1180 for 57g)
Okay, backstory – I have a long and complicated history with the original Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. It began in a bath one Sunday night about 8 years ago. I had recently been to one of my first Dermalogica launches where I was presented with the wonder that is Daily Microfoliant for the first time. I could not wait to use it! Eager to experience what all the other beauty eds and bloggers around the world so frequently raved about, I broached my tub of Daily Microfoliant for the first time, mixed a small amount with some water in the palm of my hand and rubbed it lavishly all over my face. It felt so different to anything I’d used before and, pleased with the feeling, I rubbed enthusiastically until I felt it had done its job. I then splashed my face with water and, well… this is where it went pear-shaped. I succeeded in getting it into my eyes and behind my contact lenses where it proceeded to blind me for a full 5-minutes until someone heard my screams and came to rescue me. I must have looked like a half-drowned, blind mole going between blinking incessantly and squeezing my eyes shut, unable to sit still from discomfort.
Thank goodness I’ve learned from my mistakes and from that day on I have always been particularly careful when using it to ensure I rinse it away strategically, rather than haphazardly as I did before. And despite my rather traumatising first time with it, it has become a firm favourite in my professional skincare collection as a go-to gentle exfoliating powder to help keep my skin smooth, bright and fresh.
The newly launched Daily Superfoliant has all the power and benefits of the original and then some!
Why you’ll want it
We’ve all seen the current trend towards anti-pollution skincare and the resultant wave of products that protect against external agers or aggressors such as the environment (sun, smoke and pollution in general). Say hello to the next-gen powder exfoliant that takes your daily detox to the next level! Consider it to your skin regime what your superfruit-alkalizer smoothie is to your fitness routine.
In a nutshell, it’s a highly active powder resurfacer that works hard to slough away old skin cells and leave skin smooth and pure, at the same time combatting environmental triggers of pigmentation, uneven tone and fine lines.
From the experts
Studies have shown a link between exposure to air pollution and signs of skin ageing, ranging from hyperpigmentation and fine dehydration lines to a weakened skin structure and increased sensitivity. Research even found that an increase in soot and particles from traffic was associated with 20% more pigmentation spots.
“As fine airborne particles land on the skin, they become lodged within the skin’s deeper structure, generating free radicals that trigger inflammation. The free radicals break down the skin’s natural lipid barrier, increasing trans-epidermal water loss, and create sensitised skin. In turn, we see signs of ageing such as pigmentation and structural degradation. When ageing is caused by inflammation, we call this ‘inflammaging’.” – Dr. Diana Howard, Vice President of Research & Development at Dermalogica
A powerful concoction of ingredients that help to adsorb pollutants (that means lift off the skin, hold and effectively wash away), prevent the adhesion of pollution particles to help preserve the skin’s youthful structure, and offer exceptional resurfacing.
♥ Activated Binchotan Charcoal Powder to attract and bind to impurities, as well as resurface the skin and draw out impurities and excess sebum.
♥ Oryza Sativa (Rice Bran) Extract with phytic acid which activates with water to create dual-action chemical and physical exfoliation.
♥ Enzyme Trio (papain, lipase and subtilisin) to dissolve proteins in the skin, and deeply cleanse.
♥ Malic Acid & Lactic Acid to exfoliate and resurface for ultra-smooth skin.
♥ Anti-adherence complex (Red Algae and Tara Fruit Extract) to preserve the skin’s natural barrier function by inhibiting the penetration and adherence of environmental pollutants.
♥ Niacinamide with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (which also work against uneven skin tone) to prevent the adhesion of pollution particles and prevent signs of skin ageing.
How to After washing your face with your usual facial cleanser, gently pour 1/2 teaspoon of Daily Superfoliant into wet hands. Rub them together to create a paste before applying this in small circular motions over your face, avoiding the eye area (clearly I missed this part the first time round which is why it is so very important to read instructions). Massage it gently and then rinse thoroughly using warm water, again avoiding the eye area. I prefer to rinse in small sections (cheeks and chin first, then nose and around the eyes, then forehead to ensure I don’t move any particles anywhere near my eyes).
