Etc | Cinderella

One of my favourite parts of the Christmas season (aside from the trees and twinkly lights) is the annual festive ballet performed by the Cape Town City Ballet at the Artscape Theatre. This year, we’re getting a treat in the form of one of the most classic fairy tales of all – Cinderella.

Choreographed by Veronica Paeper, this rags-to-riches tale is a favourite with little girls, and big girls like me who will always have a little girl in them no matter how many years go by. It tells the story of beautiful Cinderella, made to live a life of sadness and servitude under the manipulative hands of her evil stepmother and ugly stepsisters. One of the highlights of the performances is sure to be the animated shenanigans of uglies Violet and Daffodil, which always delight audiences.

The three-act ballet, which marks the end of a fabulous year of performances celebrating the Cape Town City Ballet’s 80th anniversary celebrations, will be filled with ornate costumes and magical set designs, danced to the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Audiences can also look forward to seeing some of their favourite performers in the roles of Cinderella and Prince Charming, including the partnerships of Elizabeth Nienaber and Ivan Boonzaaier, Frieda Mennen and Daniel Szybkowski, and Laura Bösenberg and Thomas Thorne.

FYI Senior Principal Dancer Laura Bösenberg actually made her principal dancing debut in a performance of Cinderella back in October 2005, so it will be a real treat to see this wonderful dancer perform again almost a decade later.

Fairy Parade

Little children and budding princesses will not want to miss the annual Fairy Parade held at the Artscape Theatre after the matinee performance of Cinderella on 24 December.

After the excitement of the performance, children from the audience are invited to go up onto the stage (a highlight in itself) and meet the beautiful dancers in their costumes and see the wonder of the theatre from a different angle.

They are encouraged to dress up in their prettiest fairy dresses and prince charming finery as there will be a professional photographer their to capture the moments. They’ll even get to meet Father Christmas!
