Holiday Sun

We’ve saved the best, and most important, for last because no matter where you’re going on holiday – even if it’s holidaying in your own backyard –  you’re going to need good sun protection!

Yowzer! I took this pic in Santorini, Greece – now that’s one sun you don’t want to be under without protection!

The most important things to remember are a really high, broadspectrum SPF for your face from a good brand. You don’t want just any pore-clogging slop on your skin in the hot weather, and you’ll be more inclined to be vigilant about using it if it feels and smells nice. The same goes for your body, but you can ease up a little on the SPF if you really want to get a bit of colour in your skin. And unless you’re really fussy about not having that sticky sunscreen feeling on your skin, most good brands approved by CANSA will do the trick.

Tip You’ve heard it a million times but we’ll say it again – sunscreen needs to be reapplied every few hours even if you’re not swimming or getting wet. The sweat from your skin can lessen the efficacy and some of it can be rubbed off throughout the day by clothing or other parts of your body.

Good sunnies, like a good hat, are essential to protect your eyes and the delicate, sun-sensitive skin around them from the sun. Plus, they look awesome!

And of course, whether or not you think you’ll be getting burnt, a great after sun product is worth its weight in gold to minimise the effects of burning, and simply treat sun exposed skin (even when you don’t think you’ve done damage).

First day of holiday and attempting to get some afternoon sun on deck.

Not paying enough attention to good self-tanning makes Lauren a pale girl. The Greeks would be ashamed!

Being so pale, one of my absolute holiday necessities is good self-tan, and it’s a tricky business to find one that doesn’t make very fair skin oh-so orange. I love these beauties:

Sisley Self-Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care (R875)

St Tropez Self Tan Perfect Legs (R275)

If you missed them, take a look at what other make-up, skincare, and hair & body essentials went into my holiday kit…it’s no wonder my suitcase weighed 32.6kgs with all that in there.

What are your must-haves for holiday trips? I bet you pack far better than I do!
