Leader of the Pack

When it comes to packing, minimalism has never really been my thing.

I usually take days to pack and I take EVERYTHING. The thought of finding myself 3000 miles away from home without something I need scares me more than the hefty fine for an overweight bag. The result? A cosmetics case filled to the brim that weighed 9kg on my last trip (and that’s not even including my regular make-up bag or in-flight toiletries). Feast your eyes!

If it’s not inside…it’s on top! There wasn’t an inch of free space left in here after I was finished cramming it with essentials.

I have a problem, I realise this. But of all the things I packed on my trip to sunny Europe, I did actually use almost everything and most of them I do consider absolute must-haves in the quest for healthy hair, well-protected skin and looking pretty natural while trotting around the world.

So, if you’re planning a little trip of your own in the next few months, whether it’s overseas or closer to home to enjoy the fabulous SA sun (whenever it decides to show its face), here are my holiday essentials for make-up, hair and body, skin and sun care.

I’ll be posting them up over the next two weeks and I’m sure you’ll find at least some that you know you’ll love and need to have, and don’t forget to read those with reviews to see why they are so great.

Make-up Magic

Okay, so clearly one look at the photo above tells you that I took far more make-up than just these five products, but these are the ones I used nearly every single day and really relied upon to keep myself looking decent throughout my trip, no matter how lazy I was feeling.

Sensai Fluid Finish Lasting Velvet Foundation (R450) has become my new best friend. A little goes a long, long way, which makes the price worth it for a light-feeling and excellent coverage product that stays put for the whole day. Who has time for touching up foundation when on holiday?

Catrice Made to Stay Highlighter Pen (R49,95 review) I love this easy, budget beauty buy for providing a little lift to brows and highlight to the inner corners of eyes and, when you’re feeling lazy, use it all over your eyelids for a beautiful shine.

Inglot Face Blush (R179) is a great buy and applies like a dream to give your cheeks a pretty flush of colour (check it out below).

When wearing a lippy with a coral undertone, make sure you use a blusher with a similar tone for a more natural look.

Whether you’re swimming, tanning or just seeing the sights, in hot places waterproof mascara is a must-have to prevent raccoon eyes.

Sensai Intense Lasting Colour Lipstick in 102 (R365) worked hard every day to keep my lips looking perfect, without drying out, wandering off or fading. I am obsessed with it! Take a look at the colour above – such a beautiful orange/red!

Yardley Lash Plumper Waterproof Mascara (R99,95 review) saved me from looking like a drowned rat in Mykonos and allowed me to emerge from the sea like the mermaid I always thought I was…as a child.

Keep an eye out for the next post where I’ll be sharing my favourite holiday hair and body must-haves!
