Pantene Trial: Week 1

Pantene Trial: Week 1

When Pantene revealed their latest damage-blocker technology at a recent beauty launch, I was intrigued. And when they told me that I could have the glossy, gorgeous locks of famous celebrities without washing my hair using expensive bottled water, I sat bolt upright. Could it really be true? I’m taking part in the Pantene Shine Strong challenge to find out.

Why is water damaging?

Even though the minerals found in tap water are good for our body, they can have a negative effect on hair over time, especially if you wash your hair daily. Dr John Gray, hair care expert and trichologist, explains that things like copper ions and other minerals, found naturally in all sources of water, can actually erode the hair’s protein layer over time. This oxidation damage can eventually lead to a condition called protein-porosis, which is basically minuscule holes in the hair. What’s the big deal?

‘This causes hair strands to become brittle, and more prone to breakage,’ – Dr Gray.

Simply by washing your hair, you can actually be causing damage long-term but who has the money to flush down the drain washing their hair with bottled water? Not me!

Over the next month, I’ll be putting Pantene’s new Pro-V formula with antioxidant damage-blockers (now present in all their shampoos) to the test to see if it makes a difference to my hair.

My Pantene Trial Kit

To help get my trial started, Pantene sent me their Repair & Protect Shampoo and Moisture Renewal Conditioner (both R42,99 for 200ml). All their shampoos and conditioners also come in larger 400ml (R64,99) and 750ml (R99,99) sizes, with a range of additional treatment products (from R56,99 to R66,99).

Initial thoughts

I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the first few uses, so I was rather shocked to find my hair condition better from just one wash! My hair felt so soft and smooth and the feeling continued for days later, past the time when my hair usually starts to feel a bit coarser and dry. It leaves me excited to continue with the challenge and see what the next four weeks bring.

Sorry, not sorry

If you haven’t already seen it, take a look at this video which is part of Pantene’s #ShineStrong campaign. It exposes a certain human truth for us as women and encourages us to stop apologising all the time, and to start owning our beauty, confidence and choices.
